Still using Entourage

A while back I posted that I was trying out new mail programs. I was using Mail.App and then tried Thunderbird, and now I believe that I have finally found the mail app I will stick with for a while: Entourage. I can hear the musings now. At work I spend a considerable amount of time in email, and that is Outlook. However, when away from work, I don’t need to manage tons of email, just personal email. I have simple requirements, IMAP, and preview pane :) I will re-iterate my issues with Mail.app.

1. If you like to leave Mail.App open all the time, and your powerbook goes to sleep, and then you wake up your powerbook, sometimes it will fail to get new messages and spin the CPU. Sometimes you have to force quit it just to regain control. Grrr!

2. When I am using the preview pane to view an email, when I try to reply, sometimes the email is chopped off after maybe 10 lines or so. If I try again, the same thing happens. If I open the mail and then click reply it works fine. Re-launching Mail.app will solve the problem temporarily.

I am a server type guy. I kinda expect apps to run forever, and I should never need to restart the app. This means, I like stuff to not leak, and to have solid code paths so that typical usage patterns work like a champ. Don’t get me wrong. If someone said, “Hey they fixed a lot of stuff in Mail.App and it is stable now.” I will be the first one to try using it again. I love the simple layout and the pretty icons and stuff, but I really need dependability first.

Entourage for now.

  1. [...] James Caudill also finds Entourage far superior to Mail.app. He outlines a number of problems that made Mail unusable for him and make Entourage his email client of choice: Don’t get me wrong.
